Western States 100 Controversy

Good article on Competitor Magazine Online about the Western States disqualification:

At the 2006 Western States 100 Endurance Run, spectators at the finish line on the Placer High School track in Auburn, California witnessed another collapse of a highly trained athlete. In this case, the nightmare began for Seattle’s Brian Morrison as he entered the finish area, just 300 meters from clinching the race victory….

Jurek and pacer number two, Jason Davis, were faced with a classic “Catch-22”: Help their friend to his feet, potentially disqualifying him from the race, or do nothing and watch as Morrison suffered in a heap on the ground. For Jurek, it was an obvious easy decision. In comments made after the race, Jurek felt that the spur-of-the-moment decision was the right one to make. “I acted instinctively,” he was quoted as saying.
