Jonathan Wyatt the King of the Mountain was dethroned at this years World Mountain Running Championships. I have a feeling if it wasn’t for the dog attack he would have easily repeated.
Jonathan Wyatt, the defending champion, finished second in the world mountain running championship in Bursa Turkey yesterday.
Wyatt of Wellington covered the 12,090m uphill course in 56m 22s, just six seconds behind the winner Rolando Ortiz of Colombia.
Wyatt was suffering from dog bites sustained while previewing the course two days before the championship. Wyatt was taking medication for the bites and had received five injections.
Team manager Barry Ellis said that the race ended up a sprint finish, with Ortiz just having an extra edge.
“It was a gutsy, gutsy effort from Jonathan, given what he had been through,” said Ellis.
Wyatt is five times previous world champion.
