Obudu Mountain Race attracting representitives from top mountain running countries.

The Obudu Mountain Race is going to be one of the more exciting mountain races ever held. It looks like some Kenyans are going to be participating which should be very interesting.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), William Archibong said 20 countries were lined up to field athletes for race which also have the backing of World Mountain Race Association (WMRA) . “I am happy to announce that virtually all the top mountain race runners in the world from the best mountain race countries in the world have confirmed participation in the 2nd Obudu Mountain Race next month. We have athletes from New Zealand, USA, Colombia, Australia, Czech Republic, South Africa, Austria and Kenya among others are confirmed for the race.The reigning world mountain race champion, Orlando Ortiz is from Colombia while the women’s champion, Andrea Mayr is from Austria,” Archibong said. “From New Zealand we have the recently deposed world champion, Jonathan Wyatt who won the world title five times before he lost the title last month to Ortiz in Bursa, Turkey at the 22nd World Mountain Running Trophy and Kate Mcllroy who was also deposed as the women’s world champion”, he further said. He stressed that there is significant increase in this year’s prize money which would see winners receive US$ 50,000, runners up to collect US$ 20,000 while third get US$ 9000, fourth US$ 8000, fifth US$ 7000, sixth US$ 6000, seventh US$ 5000 and eighth US$ 4000 just as the women’s race will have the same prize money as the men’s race.
