Uli Steidl takes the Seattle Endurance Challenge.

October 10th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Not much of a surprise but Uli Steidl won the The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 mile race in Seattle (I thought he was focusing on the marathon!). Uli pocketed $1000 and a trip to San Francisco to compete in the final race which has $10,000 up for grabs. I am going out on a limb here and making a prediction that Uli will win that race… who could beat him?

Top 3 from the 50 mile race (the times look slow either the course or conditions were very tough or they were taking it easy):

1. Uli Steidl Shoreline, WA 8:17:30
2. Phil Kochik Seattle, WA 8:30:26
3. Jen Segger-Gigg Squamish, BC 9:47:22

Uli will definitely be tough to beat, but Matt Carpenter might be able to do it if he goes.

Anyway, does this mean you’re revising your original prediction? In your May 16th entry, you said you knew who was going to win.

    Hey Grey,

Uli was always my oringinal pick. Carpenter could definitely do it as well. I don’t know much about the course I have never run down there but it seems to me like it would be fastish… so I think trail runners who can run like a road runner would do well. Both of those guys fit the bill. Are you doing the race? Will probably be one of the most competitive ultras ever… 10k makes people push alot harder.

Scott, you’re probably right about the course being relatively fast. It covers many of the same trails and roads as the Miwok 100K, a fairly quick race as trail ultras go. Since I don’t have a chance against either Uli or Matt, I’ll be going to JFK instead!
